Shortwood Infant School
Shortwood School was built in 1900 but was founded in 1896 and therefore we have recently celebrated our 100th birthday. The building consists of three classrooms, a library/ICT suite/resource area, staff room, offices, a large kitchen/servery, and a hall used for lunches, P.E. and assembly. A demountable classroom is situated in the playground which is used by Playbox Playgroup (information enclosed). The play area consists of a small field with trees, a pond and wild garden, used for environmental studies and a large tarmac area consisting of a shelter and play cottage. An adventure playground/trim trail was opened in 2001 after a mammoth fund-raising operation by the PTA. This has subsequently been added to with the help of Playbox Playgroup. We now have a train, caterpillar and house/station area. Number of children on roll at September 2006 is 47.
Parents and the School
We believe that the education of your child should be a partnership between school and home.
All parents are asked to become actively involved in their children's learning at school. Children will bring home books for you to read, share and enjoy with them, as well as those the children read for themselves. Teachers may ask for your co-operation in many areas and will inform you of the topics the class is following in the hope that you can share artefacts and other resources that will help to increase the children's understanding.
We operate an open door policy so that if you are unhappy or concerned about something we want you to tell us as soon as possible, but it should not be done in front of the children. While the teacher is with the children her role is to teach. This applies to both the beginning and the end of the day. It may not always be possible to see you immediately although we will do our best - but it will always be possible to make an appointment.
We have an open evening once a term for a more in depth discussion about your child's progress. There is a general “Meet the Teachers” evening in the Autumn for every year group. For children in YR there is a meeting to discuss their progress at the beginning of the Spring Term. Y1 and Y2 have a progress meeting mid-Spring term. At the end of the Summer Term you will receive a written report and for those children who are being assessed at the end of Key Stage I there will be a detailed report of their attainment.
We hold regular Open Mornings where parents are invited to spent the morning watching lessons. Class assemblies are held to which parents are invited to hear about the work the children have been doing.
We also welcome parents in school on a more regular basis to help in the classrooms or around the school. Some of the activities parents could help with include art and craft, reading, playing maths games, working with the computer and cooking.
We have an active PTA, the "Friends of Shortwood" who meet regularly and through their fund-raising activities, finance many of the larger school projects, e.g., the Trim Trail and pond area. All parents of children attending the school are automatically members of the "Friends of Shortwood". Each year group has a Parent Representative who links with the PTA. There are many ways in which parents can support the school and the PTA is vital to our funding. It can, and has, made such a difference to the children. In the last year alone, the PTA has helped to provide eight new computers for school.
