I am the other part of the Reception team, working 3 days a week with Rainbows. The other 2 days of the week are spent working with the Foundation Stage in a children’s centre in Windsor.
Although I am a “new girl “ at Shortwood, having only joined last September, I have worked with Reception children for almost 10 years.
Before changing career I used my degree in Linguistic and International Studies to follow a path of International Sales and Marketing. This involved many hours away from home – something I knew I could not continue when I had my own 2 boys! Those 2 are now aged 12 and 15 and keep us fully occupied with all their activities outside of school.
Whenever we have the chance my husband Iain and I “escape” with our family on our narrow boat where we spend some lovely restful days travelling the Thames and the Wey.
I started here at Shortwood as a newly qualified teacher in September 1999. I was very fortunate in that prior experience had taught me that Shortwood was indeed a very special place to be for both pupil and teacher. I cannot imagine a happier, more supportive atmosphere than we have here. Prior to qualifying as a teacher I spent many years (exactly how many is my secret!) working as a Nursery Nurse in the state system, and so consequently, most of my life has been spent at school!
I am married with 2 grown up children; a son and a daughter. Although our family menagerie has decreased more recently we are all great animal lovers and share our lives with 2 cats and a tame pigeon called Woody!
Out of school I enjoy ice-skating and regularly skate as part of the Montem Majors synchronized ice skating team. When time and money permit I also enjoy travelling, and have qualified as an open water diver.

My name is Susan Bleakley. I work part-time in Reception Class. I graduated from a 4 year teacher training course in 2003 and have worked at Shortwood Infant school since September 2005 and have enjoyed every minute. The staff at Shortwood welcomed me into the team and I have benefited (professionally and personally) from the kind, supportive and relaxed atmosphere they offer here.
I have a 5 year old son as well as 2 cats, 2 tortoises and too many fish to count. In the little free time I have left I enjoy travelling around the country getting dragged up mountains and cross-country walks.
